Quick answer: A good prank call script for an AI voice fits in a few lines: a specific character, an ordinary cover story, two or three details about the person you are calling, a slow escalation toward the absurd, and a planned ending. You write it as instructions ("You are…"), never as a dialogue, because the AI improvises. Here is a 6-step method, a full example, and the mistakes that sink a call.
What the AI does with your script
Before you write anything, it helps to know how the text is used. On PrankCall AI, your script becomes the brief for a character who:
- speaks first, as soon as the person picks up, with an opening line drawn from your script;
- opens in the script's language, then switches to the other person's language if they reply in a different one;
- improvises every line based on what the person says, keeping replies short, the way people talk on the phone;
- keeps it light: if the person gets annoyed or asks to stop, it wraps up with a joke and hangs up.
So you are not writing lines to be read out. You are writing a brief for an improv actor. The clearer the brief, the more believable the character.
The 6-step method
1. The character: who is calling, and from where
A job, a name, a place, a tone. "You are Megan, front desk at a car rental agency downtown, polite but swamped" works far better than "you are someone from a company". One small verbal tic ("okay, hang on, hang on…") is enough to bring them to life.
2. The cover story: a boring reason to call
The best pranks start from something mundane: a delivery, a booking, a survey, a lost item. Nobody gets suspicious, and the drift is what makes it funny. A worrying cover story (an accident, a debt, a complaint) kills the laugh before it starts.
3. The details: what the character knows about the person
Two or three harmless, true details: their first name, their town, a hobby their friends know about. "The package is for Jake, on Maple Street" makes the call feel real. Stick to things any friend would know; nothing private or sensitive.
4. The escalation: three steps, not ten
Two minutes goes fast. Plan a slow build in three beats: a normal request, then an odd detail, then something completely absurd. Spell it out: "start very seriously, add one strange detail every two or three exchanges". Without that instruction, the AI may rush it… or never get going.
5. The ending: decided before the call
A prank without an ending falls flat. Tell the AI when and how to finish: "once they figure it out, or before the call ends, close with: this was a prank from Sarah, have a great evening!". On PrankCall AI a call lasts two minutes at most, so without a planned ending the punchline can land after the line goes dead. This is the only sentence worth writing word for word.
6. Tone and guardrails
One line for register (formal or casual, pace, politeness) and one line for limits: "stay friendly, never threaten, don't mention money or anything serious". The character sticks to it better when it is written down.
Full example: before and after
Before (too vague): "Prank Tom, be funny."
The AI has no character, no cover story and no ending: the call fizzles out.
After (ready to paste):
"You are Megan from the downtown car rental agency, polite but a bit overwhelmed. You are calling Tom to confirm the booking he supposedly made for Saturday: a nine-seat minibus. Start very seriously (pick-up time, driver's license, mileage). Then add one strange detail every two or three exchanges: the minibus is decorated for a wedding, then it has to be returned with a full tank of confetti, then the driver included in the deal only speaks in rhymes. Stay polite and upbeat the whole time. If he insists he never booked anything, push back gently once, then finish with: this was a prank from Sarah, enjoy your weekend!"
Eight lines, one character, one cover story, three beats, one ending: enough to fill a two-minute call with no dead air.
Mistakes that sink a call
- Writing a dialogue. "He'll say… you'll answer…": the person never follows the script, and the character ends up lost.
- Adding stage directions. No need for "(laughs)" or "(deep voice)": the character talks, it doesn't describe what it is doing.
- Overloading. Ten twists in a 4,000-character script is a monologue. Keep the best one.
- Forgetting the ending. Without a closing line, the call stops when the person hangs up or the two minutes run out, often before the punchline.
- Getting too personal. A detail only someone very close would know can worry people instead of amusing them.
- Calling at the wrong time. If the call goes to voicemail, the AI hangs up without leaving a message and the credit is not refunded, so pick a moment when the person can answer.
Test before you call
A script gets tuned like a joke: by telling it. The in-browser trial puts you in the other person's shoes: you talk to the character through your microphone, with no phone call, for 0.5 credits per try. Use it to:
- check that the opening line sounds natural;
- play the suspicious friend ("is this a prank?") and see if the character holds up;
- try different voices: PrankCall AI offers ten, and the same script lands differently depending on the voice.

What a script should never contain
Even a well-written script can cross the line. Never write:
- a fake call from the police, emergency services, a bank or a government office, or impersonate a real person;
- a threat or a fake emergency (a relative's accident, a debt, a burglary);
- a vulnerable target: a child, an elderly or anxious person;
- an instruction to call again and again. In France, for example, repeated malicious phone calls made to disturb someone's peace are punishable by one year in prison and a €15,000 fine (article 222-16 of the French Criminal Code).
And the recording is never shared without the pranked person's consent. For more detail, read are prank calls illegal?
